This shimekazari is inspired by the legend of Somin Shōrai, who is said to have aided the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto.
It is not only a decoration to welcome the Toshigami-sama (New Year deity) but also a talisman for health and protection from illness.
In the Ise region, it is traditionally said to be displayed throughout the entire year for continued good fortune.

You can choose from two designs:
“Shōmon” (笑門) — symbolizing happiness and laughter entering your home.
“Hidari-uma” (左馬) — a lucky motif representing success and prosperity.

A shimenawa marks a sacred boundary where deities descend.
It acts as a spiritual barrier, keeping impurities and evil spirits away.
Hanging a shimenawa at the entrance symbolizes a home prepared to welcome the Toshigami-sama, the deity of the New Year.

Traditionally, New Year’s preparations begin on December 13, known as Susuharai no Hi (the day for year-end cleaning).
It is customary to hang the shimenawa between December 13 and 31, and remove it at the end of Matsu-no-uchi (January 8; or January 15 in some regions).

Please note:

• The 29th is sometimes avoided as it can be read as “double hardship” (ni-jū-ku), though some interpret it as fuku (good fortune).

• The 31st is called Ichinichi Kazari (one-day decoration) and is traditionally considered inauspicious.
