According to Japan’s 24 seasonal divisions, the period of Bōshu begins around June 5, followed by the summer solstice. Bōshu marks the season of rice planting, and the character “芒” refers to plants in the grass family (Poaceae), such as rice and grasses—essential to Japanese culture and agriculture.

Interestingly, the same character "芒" can also be read as susuki (Japanese silver grass), typically associated with autumn. However, in early summer, before it produces its plumes, the Takanohasusuki (Variegated Silver Grass) begins to emerge. This particular variety has striking white stripes on its leaves, reminiscent of a hawk’s feathers—hence its name.

You might not expect to see silver grass in summer, but this variety is grown for its beautiful foliage. Its cool appearance suits the season well, and when dried, its curling leaves add a dynamic, graceful touch. We’ve arranged it in a swag style with Sankirai berries to highlight its charm.

This seasonal wall decoration with Takanohasusuki brings a refreshing natural accent to your space and is perfect for early summer.
