At a certain folk craft shop, we came across a shimenawa (sacred rope) so beautiful that we couldn’t help asking the shop owner who made it. That’s how we met Mr. Kiyoshi Jokō, whom we affectionately call Jicchan (“Grandpa”). He’s a master craftsman of shimenawa, and he does everything himself—from cultivating the rice plants to weaving the ropes. We even had the honor of helping with his rice harvest this July.

For Jicchan, making the shichigosan-nawa (shimenawa used for New Year decorations) begins with planting the rice in spring. Every step is essential preparation, and his commitment to perfection—down to the last millimeter—is truly inspiring.

What began as a way to support the preservation of the traditional rural landscapes of Ehime, where his rice fields lie, has now become a full-fledged form of traditional craftsmanship. Each piece he creates embodies his life’s work and the spirit of those living traditions.

The “Grandchild Project,” led by his real grandchild, continues to carry on Jicchan’s legacy—it is now in its fourth year.

Mr. Jokō’s shichigosan-nawa are distinct for their use of black and white straw—symbolizing black rice and white rice—and for the treasure knot (takaramusubi) at the center, a hallmark of his work.
