In Japan, pine is an essential symbol of the New Year.
At Little, we’ve been blending pine and fir in our holiday pieces — such as the “Pine and Fir New Year’s Wreath” — but sourcing pine is usually limited to the Matsu-ichi, a once-a-year pine market held in early December.

This year, however, we were delighted to learn that pine from Yamagata Prefecture can be shipped earlier — and not just any pine.
There are two main types: Otoko-matsu (male pine), known for its strong, upright form and used in traditional New Year’s decorations, and Onna-matsu (female pine), which has softer needles and more graceful, flowing branches.
The gentle movement of Onna-matsu makes it a beautiful choice to enjoy not only for New Year’s but throughout the winter season.

Paired with fir, banksia, and viburnum tinus,
this bouquet brings together the calm and freedom of winter — a piece to enjoy from now until the New Year.
