The scientific name of chrysanthemum is Chrysanthemum.
In the West, chrysanthemums bred overseas are affectionately shortened to “mums.”

Originally, mums were brought back to Japan to refresh the old image of chrysanthemums as “funeral flowers.” These vibrant imported varieties have now become classics themselves. Interestingly, what feels new today are the Edo-period koten-giku (classical chrysanthemums). Looking into chrysanthemum history makes you realize how trends always come full circle.

While the season for classical chrysanthemums is still ahead, mums start to take on warm autumn hues after the Double Ninth Festival has passed. Their soft gradation of fall colors makes them perfect for enjoying the season’s shift.

Charming and elegant, mums also make a wonderful choice for celebratory gifts.
