Also known as the Sansho Rose due to its pinnate leaves that resemble those of the Japanese pepper tree (sansho), the Hakone Rose is a wild species of rose native to Japan.
It is one of the tallest wild roses found in Japan, growing up to 5–6 meters in height.
In early summer, it produces delicate, light pink single-petaled flowers.
Hakone Rose is primarily found in the wild around the Fuji-Hakone region, spanning Kanagawa, Yamanashi, and Shizuoka prefectures.

Characteristics:

• Blooming Season: May to July

• Flowers: Single blooms, around 5 cm in diameter, with soft pink petals. The buds are reddish, and the petals fade from deep pink to nearly white as they open. Each flower blooms individually at the tip of a branch and typically falls by the next day.

• Appearance: More reminiscent of summer flowers like Hibiscus or Calycanthus than traditional roses.

• Growth: Can be enjoyed naturally without pruning, although light pruning is recommended if branches become too dense or old.

Cultivation Tips:

• Sunlight: Prefers full sun year-round.

• Pest Resistance: Generally resistant to disease and pests, but aphids and spider mites may appear between spring and summer. Treat with insecticide if necessary.

• Pruning: Not necessary if grown naturally, but for better air circulation or shape control, prune back crowded or aged branches. For a more compact form, prune shoots back by one-third after flowering or in winter.

• Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds, cuttings, or by dividing shoots that emerge near the base.

This wild rose is both hardy and elegant, making it a wonderful addition to any garden that embraces the beauty of native Japanese flora.
