A beloved favorite from last year, Hakkakuren is back again this season.
Its charming, umbrella-like leaves give it a whimsical look—almost as if a little frog might be hiding underneath.

Despite the name Hakkaku (literally “eight corners”), the leaves don’t actually have eight points. The name comes from their resemblance to the shape of hakkaku (star anise), the aromatic spice.
The second part of the name, ren (lotus), refers to the way the leaves resemble those of a lotus plant. Together, these two references create the name Hakkakuren.

As its connection to star anise suggests, Hakkakuren is a mountain plant native to China.
Its flowers bloom beneath the leaves and are often hidden from view, so this plant is primarily appreciated for its foliage. It makes a wonderful accent in a garden or flower bed.

Care Instructions:
Sensitive to heat, it thrives in cool areas with balanced lighting—not too much direct sun, but not full shade either.
Bright, dappled light (or light partial shade) is ideal.
