We visited bonsai trees in various regions of Japan to learn more about bonsai trees that originated in the mountains and the memory of bonsai as told by the tree's annual growth rings.
Bonsai are small, large trees nurtured over many years. The culture of bonsai, which condenses scenes of nature, reflects the Japanese view of nature, which is awe-inspiring.
As I visited production areas throughout Japan, I learned that bonsai has both "mountains" and "fields. In contrast to "field" bonsai, which are created by attaching a wire to a straight trunk, "mountain" bonsai, which were native to steep rocky mountains, have a form that responds to the harsh environment and is drawn by the tree itself. The trunks, crushed by the weight of snow, ripple heavenward in search of light as the snow melts. The branches flutter in the wind that blows incessantly. It is the beauty of nature's form, beyond the reach of human artifice.
However, life has a limit.
In his new work "BONSAI," he breathed new life into a bonsai that had become dead for some reason.
In the first work, three species of bonsai, Ippiki, Morimatsu, and Ezo-matsu, were made into neat balls. By carving the tree in a rounded shape, I tried to trace all the grains that emerge from within without interruption and to reflect the life of the bonsai in all its glory.
The rings of nature are honest. It is because of this honesty that we find beauty in the patterns. When you wear and listen carefully, you can hear the quiet breathing of the trees over hundreds of years.
